A new study claims that a herbal supplement containing the ingredient sildenafil may help people with erectile dysfunction. The product, known generically as tadalafil, has been shown to improve erectile function and may have the potential to improve blood flow to the penis.
The study, funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), was published in theBritish Medical Journalin December last year. It was the first study to look at the effects of herbal supplement, tadalafil, on men's sexual health.
Viagra was the first erectile dysfunction drug approved by the FDA in 1998. It was first made available in 1998 by Eli Lilly & Co.
In 2003, a placebo-controlled trial published in theJournal of the American Medical Associationfound that Viagra could improve erectile function in men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction. The trial was led by Dr. Bruce H. Leuchter of the Cleveland Clinic.
Researchers in the trial looked at 30 men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction who took sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, for four weeks. Sildenafil was taken once daily, and then placebo pills were taken twice daily.
A total of 16 men with erectile dysfunction, who were not taking any form of psychotropic drugs, were given sildenafil for four weeks. Those taking placebo pills had a significantly lower mean age of the men and a significantly lower mean number of erections.
After four weeks, the men had improved their erectile function, with a significantly higher proportion of men reporting improved performance. These findings were consistent with those in a previous study.
Researchers concluded that the use of sildenafil may be a promising treatment for erectile dysfunction. It is not known if tadalafil will have any effects on the blood vessels that supply blood to the penis.

Dr. Bruce Leuchter, the study's lead author, was not involved in the research, however.
A group of men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction who took tadalafil were randomly assigned to take a placebo pill of sildenafil or sildenafil + placebo pill. After four weeks of treatment, the group that took the placebo had a significantly higher mean age of men and a significantly lower mean number of erections.
The researchers found that there was no significant difference between the groups in any sexual dysfunction subgroups.
However, they did find a small increase in the number of erections, with the group that took the placebo having a significantly higher frequency of erections than the group that took the placebo.
Although these were small, researchers noted that the study results were not statistically significant in relation to other sexual characteristics. The researchers noted that they did not find a statistically significant increase in the number of erections.
Researchers reported that these findings were consistent with those in a previous study.
However, the researchers note that there are no clinical studies that directly compare the efficacy of sildenafil with other forms of erectile dysfunction treatment.
